Ok so perhaps this is another futile attempt to update more, but I was talking with a friend of mine, and in light of me moving back home to Waukegan (heh its funny spell check considers my hometown a mistake...how interesting) I decided to start up a new project so that I'll stay productive when I go back home to all my distractions. Not that I'm not super distracted in an apartment where I have a flat screen tv, loads of video games and Pc Games >_>.

The idea came from a conversation I had with my friend when I suggested he pick back up his old Chrono Trigger story. Nothing I thought could be better to get him out of his writing block than to pick up a story set in a world which is totally rich and teeming with untold potential rather than trying to world build something completely new and falling into old habits of giving up and moving on. I too suffer from this same problem and then the same logic came right back at me when the idea of picking up an old Dragon Ball Z story I had been playing with and actually fleshing it out into a full fledged comic.

So, with that said I'm going to stop writing and start drawing, revising old designs and making something, while vastly different from the cannon (no characters from the show/manga appearing) and instead using the universe created by Akira Toriyama to use as a backdrop to actually get me to draw something. So I leave you now to venture off into the night and start drawing.

God I suck at this updating the blog thing, ok well I did some drawing, some I like, some I'm not happy with but whatever. At work atm so I can't update them now, I'll try and remember to post them tonight when I get home.

Drawing a day

So just yesterday I had an existential crisis and it put me in a real shitty mood. I just graduated in May, haven't drawn much since, and in order to get better and keep my edge I'm going to have to get down and dirty and start drawing a lot more. So I'm going to do a drawing a day, I don't have a scanner and at the time of writing I'm at work and op-- phone rang hang on....

Ok so yeah Can't really get away with too much drawing here at work and theres no scanner I can work with and i didnt bring my tablet, but i did bring a sketchbook which is all i really need. So I'm going to do a drawing a day from now on and if i miss a day i'll have to draw two the next day or 1 really kick ass one i guess. I might not upload them everyday and might end up doing a feed dump of 2-3 or more with dates corresponding to them. Anyway I'm going to start sketching now and ignoring customers.

Japanese Project

In an attempt to practice my Japanese as well as use what I've learned in these last couple of years I imported a Japanese game for my psp called Phantasy Star Portable 2. No one thought we'd get an American release so in attempt to satiate my need for PS gameplay, I imported it and downloaded it directly to my ps3 and copied it to my psp. I'll upload a few images along with descriptions to document my playtime with it. Although I seem to have misplaced my digital camera...

Ok so I seem to have lost my camera, which is very bad it was expensive. So i will upload from my camera phone which is lower quality, I will replace images and video when i get a new camera/find my actual camera.

Proposal: I intend to integrate what I've learned this semester (and previous semesters) into daily life, and since i don't know many native speakers I will do the next best thing by using it how I would normally in my everyday life. Specifically with video games. I have shown some use of Japanese in a very old project from Final fantasy XI where I tried to communicate with Japanese players, although I had no Japanese language interface for that game and could only use romanized japanese words. However I now have a new game, for a handheld system that is 100% Japanese. It has Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji tools. I intend to communicate as best I can in a realtime interface with what I've learned, from a basic greeting to asking advanced questions and getting responses from other players. The tools I am using include my phone's camera/camcorder, and this blog I have used for other school oriented assignments.

Edit: unfortunately the videos will not send, they are too large and I can't send from the phone. So i will just include low res still images and explanations at the bottom.
Edit 2: it seems this blog has trouble showing some of the japanese and instead shows a white block. If that happens, highlighting that text shows what was really under there.

Teaming up with online players, most american players write their names in katakana. The big purple robot is me. トウカイ MK.2 is my characters name, while エミリア is another players name. メナス、is the short one on the right hand side.Unfortunately my camera could not capture text fast enough so I will just write everything I wrote and the players responses. It was very interesting as I encountered some slang amongst the players I was not used to and had to investigate.

I apologized for not being very good at Japanese: ごめなさい、私の 日本語を じょうずじゃないです。

エミリア:いえいえ、あなたはいいですよ。

メナス: にょろん
I did not know what にょろん meant so i had to look it up, I asked what it meant in game and they just sort of laughed. It was a little bizarre, as when i looked it up I just got a lot of youtube videos to an anime title. I'm guessing it was a characters catch phrase or something.

as we progressed further together we found some treasure chests, including some new weapons and armor. In trying to use new vocabulary I asked for the new sword that dropped.

Me: あのう、エミリアさん。
エミリア:何?
Me:そのセイバーをかえしてもらいたいまして。
I guess i said it wrong or impolitely, but they seemed to understand and let me have it, probably more because they didn't need it.
エミリア:もちろん( ̄ー ̄)
メナス:   さう。。。
which i assume was a sigh.

after a bit more fighting of monsters, we got to a large dragon and killed it. The fight was frantic and difficult to get pictures. Although in the end, we got a lot of treasure. And I got a new shield.
Me:たいへんですね
エミリア:おめでとう! Emilia then started to dance and so did I as we returned to the city.

after that 1 round people had to leave and I started having connection problems. I did get to see more players talking amongst themselves, but there was quite a bit of kanji i didn't know and it went by so quick I couldn't even write them down or take pictures. Overall I think it was a great success, and even though i didn't get to say much in the fast paced battles i was able to communicate what i wanted to effectively.
Pose!
